Reports 5.1 has been officially released!

It took almost a week longer than I said it would, but it’s finally done.  Version 5.1 of the DotNetNuke Reports Module is in the DotNetNuke Project Release Tracker.  I’ll post some more info over the next week, but for now, here are the release notes...

Well, it's official.  Assuming I pass the two courses I haven't received grades from, I completed my final day of continuous education (well, except for the summer breaks/internships) for 18 straight years (K-12 + 5 years of post-secondary) today. Now that I'm finished school, I can settle down and finish up a few side-projects and some DNN Reports work.

I’ve been pretty busy with school, and unfortunately have not been able to get going on the many new features I want to implement in the Reports Module. However, there are a number of bugs in the current version that prevent it from being used with DotNetNuke 5.0. For this reason, as well as a few other bugs that aren’t quite as major, I’m going to be preparing a minor bug-fix release: Version 5.1.

As many of you may know, I have been an intern at Microsoft for the past two summers.  In the summer of 2007, I had a blast working on Visual Studio Team Edition for Database Professionals ("DataDude") developing a code "pretty printer" that took abstract syntax trees representing SQL scripts and built formatted (and indented) SQL script.  This past summer, I worked with the ASP.Net MVC team to implement AJAX helpers in that framework.

Many readers of my blog will remember that I was a Microsoft Intern last summer...

In this post, I play around with the new IE 8 WebSlices feature and turn any Reports Module instance into an instant WebSlice!

Reports Module 5.0 has been released! Here are the new features/bug fixes in this release (you can also see the list on our RoadMap Page)

After a few delays, version 5.0 of the Reports Module has been released to the Module Release Process. This means that it should be released shortly (though given the time of year, it may take a couple of weeks). I'll be posting some How-To screencasts walking through the new features (and some old ones too) in the next week or so. I'm also working on a full User's Guide to be released shortly.

The main goal of the new Data Sources framework is to be able to support data from any number of varying sources. These sources may be standard relational Databases or they may be other data stores such as Active Directory, Excel, CRM Systems, etc. In order to be as flexible as possible, the Reports module includes a “Generic ADO.Net Data Source” which allows you to query any data source for which there is an ADO.Net Data Provider.

As promised, here is the first of my series focusing on the new data sources in the Reports module version 5.0. The Microsoft SQL Server Data Source allows host users to configure a report to retrieve data from ANY Microsoft SQL Server Database accessible from the web server.

For the next version of the Reports Module, version 5.0 (which, confusingly, is only the second major release of the module), we are introducing a new Data Sources Framework. This framework is similar to the Visualizer Framework introduced in the 4.x line, but it works in the other direction. While Visualizers are responsible for drawing UI for a Report given its results and some settings, a Data Source is responsible for generating the report results based on its settings.

Hello again everyone! I'm back from Microsoft and ready to get back in to full-time Reports module work. I wanted to post a quick blog to let everyone know I've returned and to fill you in on my plans for the next version.

The next version will be Reports Module version 5.0 and will include a few new features, most notable the new Data Sources Framework. Similar to the Visualizer Framework, this system will allow for the development of pluggable Data Sources from which data can be retrieved and passed...

Well, I've just finished up week 2 at Microsoft, which is going great by the way, but back in DotNetNuke-land a new version of the Reports module has been released! This is basically a version I finished up before leaving for Microsoft and it adds a few new features. The next major release will probably be in a few months, seeing as I can't work on the project while I'm at Microsoft, but until then check this one out.

Here's a short list of the new features implemented:

As I've mentioned in previous posts, I'm doing a 3-month internship at Microsoft this summer/spring. Well, my start date is May 8th, so its only one week away!

So I'm taking a short interlude with this post because I'm currently talking about dynamic languages, but my schedule has been a bit crazy and I thought this language would make an interesting (though mostly useless) topic.

As promised, this is the first in a possible series of posts that are designed to talk about the important differences in languages. Watch out, its a bit long :)

As many will know from my previous blog posts (particularly my introduction: Like Father, Like Son), I am a Computing Science student. I also had a significant amount of exposure (I won't say experience, because I was a lot younger then) to programming, particularly in Microsoft technologies, before starting university. I've found that my history provides me with some unique perspectives on the academic Computing Science world as well as the software world in general. One of those is a topic I like to call "The Language Wars", and I thought I'd discuss it here.

First off, I'm really excited to announce that I've been promoted to the Core Team! My responsibility this year will basically remain the same as it was last year, and that is to focus on developing the Reports Module. I'm looking forward to getting some cool features into the Reports module before I head off to Microsoft this summer for my internship (I'll be back in the Fall, don't worry!). On that topic, its I thought I'd start talking about the Roadmap for the next version of Reports.

Well, the time has finally come! The next release of the Reports Module: v04.04.02 should be released by the time you read this. You can view some release notes in the forums but here is the "feature overview": (NEW!) Visualizer Framework: Tired of a boring old grid? The Visualizer Framework allows the user to select a visualizer to display their data. These can range...

Well, I'm leaving for Redmond this afternoon to interview with Microsoft on Friday.

I got an email last night informing me that Microsoft would like to interview me next week! I’ll be flying down to Redmond, WA for a day of interviews with recruiters and project teams. It’s very exciting, but I’m also getting a bit nervous (which is not surprising :D) and I expect I may not sleep much as the interview gets closer! Also, Mozilla Firefox 2.0 (my absolute favourite browser) has been released to the public! Check it out!

I've finally gotten things together and I'm happy to announce that the Reports module has entered the DotNetNuke Release Process! This means that there will be a series of tests run by different team members to ensure that the module is ready for release. Once completed, it will be posted and available for public download!

First off, let me let everyone know that the next version of Reports is coming out really soon now! I'm sorry for all the delays, the first weeks of a semester can be hecktic. So, I've started the Fall semester (actually I'm one month in now) and things are finally settling into routine. I'm taking a really interesting course on the Implications of Computers in Society, discussing Artificial Intelligence, Privacy and other issues. I'm also doing a course on Operating Systems and one on Algorithms. Needless to...

So, It's been a little while since I blogged, but thats because I've been working on an exciting new feature for Reports. I call them "Report Renderers".

Microsoft has decided to take the tool they use to generate the MSDN documentation developers know and love and release it to the public. Codenamed Sandcastle, this "tool" (and I use quotes because its actually a few tools strung together in the good ol' command prompt) fills the gap created by the loss of NDoc.
