Effority.net has just released a new DNN Forge module:
Workflow HTML / Versioning HTML Module for DotNetNuke
This is another tool we all can use as we continue to move DotNetNuke into more enterprise level deployments.
For more complex workflow requirements there is more on the way. I can't talk about it now but there will be more annouced in the near future regarding workflows and DotNetNuke. The samples I have posted so far will work, but notice they don't use WCF (hint hint).
However, for easy to use content approval you have another great contribution by Effority.net.

Hi, Are there any plans to include this type of functionality natively within the framework/html module? As I love DNN from a development perspective but have had trouble convincing my manager about for anything other than small/medium sized sites due to the lack of versioning/workflow support that we have in a number of different CMS.

It will be nice to have a free option for workflow. It's one of my biggest headaches right now. Every 3rd party method we have tried are so complex and complicated it makes your head spin. Problem is I think they try to incorporate it with so many different aspects, like project management, and such that they lose the pure essense. Even if the core / this module becomes complex at least I am not shucking out cash all the time for it. :)
Good work guys and thanks for keeping DNN the best open source option for businesses.

eoghano, you probably mean 5.x (not 5.0)
but something as simple as this, especially since available probably can be implemented in 5.1, maybe.

Download the module and take a look at how they did it. It's quite simple and elegant in its design. It would be quite simple for any programmer to add this level of versioning functionality to just about any type of data record. Could it be more robust? Sure. But it does the job quite nicely and sufficiently.
It would be quite difficult and maybe impossible for the core framework to provide a one size fits all versioning system given the wide range of data out there. Rather, we might look for them to provide a "best practice" for content versioning that could be used as an example, much like they have provided an example for how to do module content layout templates (token replacement).
However, there is nothing stopping module developers today from including versioning in their modules. Many already do.
