New DNN INETA Speakers

I hear the INETA newsletter went out on Tuesday morning so I can finally make this blog post, though I have still yet to see a copy of the newsletter. It is with great pleasure that I get to post that I have been added to the INETA Speakers Bureau, I've been presenting at user groups over the past 3-4 years talking about everything DotNetNuke and with this new honor look forward to increasing the number of groups I can visit. I am definitely not limited to DNN, but do have quite a bit of experience with the project as a core team member, module developer and instructor for DNN training classes.

Disabling support for persistent cookies

I've blogged before about how to make timeouts work correctly for persistent cookies, but thought I should also flag up a minor, but often requested, enhancement that will be in DotNetNuke 5.0. Whilst persistent cookies are useful for a lot of sites in some cases they're not approriate. Sites that require a higher level of security such as many financial, insurance, government or ecommerce sites often do not want to offer the choice of persistent cookies to their users - we've had a number of security audit's sent in to the security@dotnetnuke.com email alias where this has been flagged as an issue.

In 5.0, we've added an option so that the "remember me" checkbox can be removed. To access this, log in as a superuser and go to the Host Settings menu. There you'll see the option to enable the remember me checkbox. By default this will be checked to match the existing behaviour, simply uncheck this to remove the "remember me" checkbox the the user.

If you want to set this option before installation, you can add <RememberCheckbox>N</RememberCheckbox> as a node to the DotNetNuke.install.config

Customizing Your FCKeditor

The FCKeditor is used extensively throughout DNN enabling Module and Page Editors and Administrators to create, format and manage content for modules such as the Text/HTML and Announcements module, as well as compose newsletters, notification messages and more. Whilst the standard layout and functionality of the FCKeditor (pictured below) will suit most needs, Administrators have the ability customize one or more instances of the FCKeditor.

Documents Module Project Update

It has been a while since I have taken over as team lead for the Documents Module project and I wanted to provide everyone in the community an update on the status of the module.

I have re-formed the team which currently consists of myself and Ted Ogrean. We are currently working on a number of items that have been identified in the current module as well as working in a few small enhancements to ensure that our next release not only resolves the outstanding issues but provides a bit of new functionality.

At this time we are targeting submission into the DotNetNuke release process by the middle to end of August and a public release will then be complete after the standard release process is completed. We are taking this bit of additional time to ensure that we fully test the module to identify any outstanding issues and also to ensure that we maintain our current XHTML compliance.

We appreciate your patience as we work through this release to provide a top quality module for the community!

Adding multiple related items when inserting a record

I am rewriting the Help module and am doing it TDD style. As I was writing a test to check the adding of a tutorial to the db I realised that what I really wanted to do was not only add the tutorial but also the list of associated category IDs. So I did a bit of research and came up with this. There is now a new parameter on the Help_AddTutorial sproc that takes an xml field. The XML is a list of the categories. The XML is then parsed and added to a temporary table which is then used to add the multiple items to the Help_TutorialCategory table.

Here's the new sproc

CREATE PROCEDURE {databaseOwner}{objectQualifier}Help_AddTutorial
@Title nvarchar(250),
@ModuleID int,
@ProductImage nvarchar(150),
@Featured bit,
@KeyWords nvarchar(200),
@DownloadName nvarchar(200),
@ShortDesc nvarchar(500),
@Archive bit,
@Description ntext,
@CategoryIDs xml
AS

INSERT INTO {databaseOwner}{objectQualifier}Help_Tutorials (
[Title],
[ModuleID],
[ProductImage],
[Featured],
[KeyWords],
[DownloadName],
[ShortDesc],
[Archive],
[Description],
[LastUpdated],
[TutorialGUID]
) VALUES (
@Title,
@ModuleID,
@ProductImage,
@Featured,
@KeyWords,
@DownloadName,
@ShortDesc,
@Archive,
@Description,
GetDate(),
NewID()
)
DECLARE @TutorialID int
SET @TutorialID = SCOPE_IDENTITY()

DECLARE @Categorys TABLE (ID int)
INSERT INTO @Categorys (ID) SELECT ParamValues.ID.value('.','VARCHAR(20)')
FROM @CategoryIDs.nodes('/Categorys/id') as ParamValues(ID)

INSERT INTO {databaseOwner}{objectQualifier}Help_TutorialCategory([TutorialId],[CategoryId])
SELECT @TutorialID, CategoryId FROM {objectQualifier}Help_Category INNER JOIN @Categorys c ON {objectQualifier}Help_Category.CategoryID = c.ID

SELECT TutorialID FROM {objectQualifier}Help_Tutorials WHERE TutorialID = @TutorialID

GO

and of course how to call it.

dnn_Help_AddTutorial
@Title ='test',
@ModuleID = 321,
@ProductImage ='test',
@Featured = false,
@KeyWords ='test',
@DownloadName ='test',
@ShortDesc ='test',
@Archive = true,
@Description ='test',
@CategoryIDs = '<categorys></categorys>
1
2'

Now my test passes and the Help module is much better off for it and TDD again saves the day.

Do you TDD??

Congratulations Spain

Many of you know that I grew up in England. As a result I enjoy watching Football (Soccer to you North Americans).

On Sunday I watched the European Championship final in HD on my 46" LCD TV - that was cool, and I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate all the Spanish football fans in the DotNetNuke Community on the victory of their team.

During my vacation in Italy I found it difficult to keep up with the early group play (although Italy's results were plastered across the media), but I was impressed with Spain's performances at all stages of the competition.

It is not always the case - but I truly believe that this year the best team won.

And by the way - don't expect much from Vicenc this week - he's probably still celebrating !!

Hello India!

Interesting results when looking at DotNetNuke.com using the Google Trends. India is a close second behind the United States. I am sure this is a surprise to a lot of people except those from India :) When you look at adefwebserver.com (my site) you see that the biggest visitors are not from the United States but from... India. So let me say Hello India!

As to the releated searces it's nice to know adefwebserver.com made the list but still far behind sites like mitchelsellers.com. When I look at my standing on mitchelsellers.com I do a bit better (up to 4th) but still behind dnncreative.com that is ranked high no matter which DNN site you look at.

I don't rank at all on dnncreative.com!, but India is only #2 on their site so at least I have India, right? Wrong! Look at DotNetNuke and India, dnncreative.com is #1 and I'm not even on the list!

A little poking around to figure out how I made the list at all (no it wasn't the United States and DotNetNuke. I didn't make that list either, smart-thinker.com (from the UK) leads that list with California being the biggest visitors... I'm from California! Where is the love? :).

The reason I made the DotNetNuke.com related searches list at all was because of United Kingdom (still second place behind the ever present dnncreative.com).

But India is still my biggest fan :)

Feedback removed from DNN Online Help

In May I added a Feedback module to the DNN Online Help page requesting feedback on how to improve the online help experience, and to enable content errors or omissions to be reported.

Firstly, many thanks to those community members who did provide feedback and report errors – it is great to get an outsiders perspective. Unfortunately, after a one month trial I found that I was receiving around 60 questions on how to complete tasks each week. I included a large notice on the module advising that questions should be posted to the forums, however the emails kept coming and so I have reluctantly removed the module.

In the future, please post your Online Help content suggestions or error reports to the Help project forum.

Reflecting on the evolution of DotNetNuke Help Documentation

The next major release of DotNetNuke, DNN 5 or DNN Cambrian, is well on its way with Beta 5 currently in testing stage. Over the past few weeks I have spent many hours excitedly learning and documenting the numerous changes to the way Administrators and Hosts use the core functionality. At this point I’m guessing that this bevy of fabulous changes will to require the largest rewrite and expansion of the DNN Online Help to date.
