Without buying a module is there an easy way to make the urls smaller ie remove all those tabid comments?

When using friendly urls, there's a setting in the web.comfig to get many of the urls down to just tabid, and eliminating all of the page names that might precede it in the url string.

Chris Hammond discusses how to turn on human-friendly URIs in his blog entry.  Note that (I believe) this functionality is enabled-by-default in DotNetNuke 5.1, though I don't believe that the switch will be flipped for upgrades.

Hope this helps!
