Skin install problem

Our system engineer installed 4.8 on one of our internal servers for me to test, but he did not install it on the C drive, but rather an E drive, which "had more room". Well, it works well enough, except that when I tried a test skin install, it apparently didn't find the right place. I think. The skin was a free one from one of the vendors who advertises here. When I installed it, it parsed it out and all and seemed to work, but when I tried to apply it, it shows up in the list of available skins, but there's an error message that says there are no skin files in the folder.

I went looking on the server, and sure enough, in the portals\0\skins folder there were no files, there was a folder that contained the zip files etc, but no individual ones. Since it at least tried to install it, created the folders anyway, is it a good assumption that the fact it's on drive E is not the problem? Something else?

I got around this by manually creating a folder name with the new skin and unzipping the files into it, but that seems inelegant. I have to assume this is not the correct method to install a skin, but what do I know?? :) Can anyone point me to a good tutorial that describes how to install skins for dummies?? :)

Thanks!

elaine

Re: Skin install problem

Elaine, good question to ask!  As long as you get to the site and it runs - the drive letter shouldn't have anything to do with the problem.

When you open the Zipped folder - do you see another zipped folder?

I've made a lot of skins and I always put my Skin files in a "Skins.zip" folder and my Container Files in a "Containers.Zip".  Both of these folders will go into another Zipped folder named whatever the name of your skins are.

For example - with the core's DNN-Blue skin package they would have

DNN-Blue.zip - This zipped folder will contain a Skins.zip and a Containers.zip folder.

Skins.zip contains all of the skin files such as: "Horizontal Menu - Fixed Width.htm" (or .ascx), "Horizontal Menu - Full Width.htm", etc etc.

Hopefully that's clearer - give it a shot and let me know!

Containers.zip contains: "image header - color background.htm", "image header - white background.htm", etc etc.

Re: Skin install problem

Hi,

I'm hoping someone can help me with this -- I'm a first time DNN user.

I downloaded a free DNN compatible skin from a website.  It came in a zip file.  When I try to upload it into my file manager, I get an error message that says:

"An Error Has Occurred When Attempting To Save The File d:\hosting\pindtech\dotnetnuke\Portals\0\XDDesignAway.zip. Please Contact Your Hosting Provider To Ensure The Appropriate Security Settings Have Been Enabled On The Server."

Can anyone help me resolve this?  What am I doing wrong?

Re: Skin install problem

You should install the skin from the Skin page under Host not in file manager.

Re: Skin install problem

When I go to the skin page and select Host, I am given two options -- DNN - Blue and DNN -grey.  There is no option to install a skin there.

Am I missing something?
