3rd party modules and 4.4.1 to 4.8.1 update

I want to update from DNN 4.4.1 to 4.8.1 on my hosted DNN site before undertaking new development on my site.

This is the firs time I've planned a DNN update.   I understand the procedures for updating DNN itself but I do not understand how to 'update' or prevent overwriting the few 3rd party modules I've installed.

Do I simply unzip / overwrite the entire DNN install then reinstall the 3rd party modules?

What is the procedure or perhaps a pointer to a tutorial on how to do this?

Thanks,

Ken

Re: 3rd party modules and 4.4.1 to 4.8.1 update

As long as your third party modules work with 4.8.1 you shouldn't have any worries. Not all modules will work on all versions of DNN.

When you upgrade DNN it should upgrade the core application itself, leaving your third party modules alone.

ALWAYS BACKUP EVERYTHING THOUGH

Backup the database, backup the file system, then do you upgrade.

BACKUP

Re: 3rd party modules and 4.4.1 to 4.8.1 update

Ken,

Backup everything first. There are some changes between these versions for child portals - if you use child portals then you can have some problems with unexpected logoff when 3rd party modules within child portal access to portal with regular user permission in background (this is my experience - some modules work with earlier versions only).

Kind regards,

Primoz

Re: 3rd party modules and 4.4.1 to 4.8.1 update

Thank you for the input.   While I understand that 3rd party modules are not guaranteed to work with a newer version of DNN,  , I'd forgotten that a dotnet app is, mostly, an xcopy install and that "installing" the new dnn wouldn't necessarily disrupt the few late-model 3rd party modules I have installed.

Thank you for taking the time to help me.

Ken

Remember you're going to have to modify your web.config file as well

Here's a blog post I made on upgrading a while back
