How do I install Source version of a Module?

Hello,

I didn't know where to post this. I  hope someone can direct me to the right forum.

I have always installed "install" versions of modules.

Now I need to install the "source" version of a module. How do I do that?

The docs show how to install the DNN source, which I have done many times.
The docs also helped me create a few new modules.

So I re-read the docs, thinking "how to install the source version of a module into my existing project/dnn installation" would be included, but I did not find it.

I have found several posts from people who tried to install source from the app interface, and someone responds saying "oh, you're trying source -- upload the install version instead" but they don't say "here's how to install source version."

Do I just copy the files to their own folder in DesktopModules? The zip's contents look like a separate project, but I assume it needs to be part of the DNN installation/ project.

I would expect the module developer would have provided some install file that says "here's what you need to manually setup the module definition" etc, but none exists.

So I'm sure it's something simple that I have overlooked that is common knowledge.

Normally, you wouldn't install the source, you'd open it as a project.

Re: How do I install Source version of a Module?

if they are properly packaged (liek most core modules are), you install source versions of modules like the install version. make sure, not to install source versions of a DNN3 module onto a DNN4 portal.

Re: How do I install Source version of a Module?

Ok, so if I open it as a project, separate of DNN, then once I make changes to it, how do I test them in dnn?

Re: How do I install Source version of a Module?

You would package it and load it into a DNN site to test.  Although, if the module source does install correctly, you could open the source right on the site.

But thinking about it, copying the module source to the appropriate folders in the source version of DNN should work too.  I haven't modified a lot of third party module source though, I'm usually opening it to find something.
