Works in VS Cassini Server but not on IIS - What am I missing?

I have gone through setting up DNN (I've got my handy copy of Professional DotNetNuke 4 (from Wrox) and also read a couple of articles about configuring DNN on Windows Vista.  It's working fine on my Cassini server with VS2008 but when I publish to IIS now I get a "file not found" error.  it's frustrating because I've configured IIS to look for "default.aspx" and I've confirmed there IS a "default.aspx" in the root directory of my site, but nevertheless I'm getting that error.

What have I forgotten to check?  Once my site worked in Cassini, I published the site from VS2008 to the IIS server (using File System, since it's local to my LAN), but I can get nowhere once it's published.  What am I doing wrong?

Did you update your portal alias?  If not, change this in the portal alias table, and then restart the application.

Here are some other suggestions if that doesn't work:

  • I know I am stating what should be obvious, but have you confirmed that the Home Directory is pointing to the right folder for your DNN install?
  • Is Default.aspx the first file in the list of "default" pages?
  • Make sure that you do not have any rewrite rules getting in the way.  Check this in your SiteUrls.config file.
  • Do you have anything in your site that might be redirecting the page request?  (logic in a module or skin)

Re: Works in VS Cassini Server but not on IIS - What am I missing?

This is quite frustrating.

I did find that I needed to make the change in the database.

This is a REAL newb question, but do I have to install DNN on the IIS server?  I mean, I installed it to my Visual Studio, then created a new DNN project, then published that entire project to my IIS directory.  Is that sufficient, or do I have to do something else?  I'm sure this is a dumb question, but I've been staring at this for 24 hours now, and I'm afraid that my years of ISP experience is making me presume/assume things that I should not presume/assume.

There is not an "install" for IIS persay,,,  But you do need to ensure a couple of minor things at the server level.

  • The correct versions of the .Net Framework need to be installed
  • Make sure that the permissions for you site are correct  - the correct account needs modify permissions for the entire site (Network Service for Win 2003 Srvr, and ASPNET for WinXp)
  • Your permissions should inherit from the parent folder unless it also has the correct permissions
  • Your site or virtual directory in IIS should have the correct version of the .Net framework chosen
  • Do not have too many Application Pools
