Setting up a Parent Portal

I have successfully created a DNN site (lets say Domain1) and I would like to create a parent portal from Domain1 using a new Doamin2.  I know I need to point the new domain2 to the root of Domain1 but I am not sure how to do this.  I am currently using IX Web Hosting and it allows me to configure the DNS settings.  Is this where you go to point the new domain2 to the root of Domain1?  Not sure how to do this and was wondering if there was a step by step instructions on how to get this done.

Any help is appreciated,

Thanks,

Peter

Re: Setting up a Parent Portal

In your DNS, set the new domain records to the same IP address as the old domain is at.  As long as the DNN portal alias is correct, DNN redirects to the new parent portal those requests that match the portal alias.

Re: Setting up a Parent Portal

Thanks Jeff,

I deleted the old 'A' , 'MX' and CNAME record files and create one new ones with the following settings:

NAME : left this blank

TTL: 86400

Data: Set this to the IP address of the first Portal

Pretty much did the same for the MX and CNAME records.

I tried to access the site but it did not go to the portal.  I am wondering if it will take 24 hours to activate?

Re: Setting up a Parent Portal

First, what does "it did not go to the portal" mean?  These are the records for the new portal, not the old one, correct?  Do they match the portal alias you have in DNN for the portal?

Re: Setting up a Parent Portal

Jeff,

What I meant is that when I tried to access the newly created parent site and was not able to do so, instead I got a default web page that said the site was under construction.

Looks like it is working now (Thank God).  Seems to take at least 24 hours for the site to update the new DNS settings.  Only thing now is that all the images on the page are blank.  Other than that it seems to be working fine.

Thanks for the help.

Peter
