Is it really this hard.... 

Still struggling to make it work. I installed 4.09 and press F5, it works fine.

 

 When I try to access through http://localhost/dotnetnuke the message I get is “Failed to update database …..because database is read only (though I have checked that this folder is not read only).

 

I uploaded every file to the remote site location on web and there I get the message “ The site currently unavailable please check later”.

 

Another question, can I work on DNN site in VS2008 to add AJAX contents etc?

that's a permissions issue. When you install sql express you decide what user to run the service under - typically most people select NT AUTHORITY\NetworkService or an administrator account, ensuring that they had read/write permissions on the folder. It looks like you either aren't running the sql server express instance with a user of sufficent rights, or else you're trying to run off a network drive. If you go to administrative tools->services and find "sql server (SQLExpress)" , right click on it and look at the log on tab, you'll be able to see what user is in use and update it to a more approriate user such as local system.

You shouldnt really use the app_database/database.mdf file .. instead download SQL express, its free, you get graphical DB management tools, and you dont have to worry about locked files, read only files, etc..

Thanks for response Cathal and JK. I am using SQL Express 2005 and VS 2008. I changed logon for  SQL express 2005 to Administrator (the account I logon to in windows) but still getting the same message i.e

Failed to update database "E:\xxx \DOTNETNUKESITE\APP_DATA\DATABASE.MDF" because the database is read-only.

 

Don’t know what to do?

Sorry I missed to mention that I have set the home directory of ‘default web site’ in IIS to this folder containing the dotnetnuke file system website. I type http://(computername)  in the IE address bar.
