Please help with First Deployement
Modified By William O'Malley on 4/2/2006 10:49:12 AM)

First let me say what a great product this is. I was able to install it on my local machine first time with no errors.

So I coppied the site files and uploaded them to my site hosted by discountasp.net. When I re-bulit the application so I could launch it, I got an error message that was looking for a file in Documents and Setings...

I read the Install documentation but didnt find anything on deployement. Could someone tell me how I upload this to the Discountasp.net server so I can begin getting my site ready?

Thank you in advance for your help,

William O'Malley

Re: Please help with First Deployement

William I'm not an expert on discountasp.net setup, but dont' they have a support system in place that gives you instructions on how to deploy a site?

I'm sure there are many people willing to help but there is no solid information on your problem here so where does one begin to help?

Re: Please help with First Deployement

it's usually a pre straightforward task. You have to transfer your database to the server (unless you've developed on your local machine but pointed the web.config setting to your production database). How this is done depends on your ISP, usually doing a backup of the database and then restoring it is the easiest. After that transfer your files to the ISP (please move all files via a tool such as FTP, as the vs.net tools for copying sites skip filetypes we use such as resx). Normally it's a good idea to check for and delete install/dnn.config if it exists, to ensure that database installation is done. Scott covers these steps in a bit more detail here and an article detailing how to transfer content between dnn sites here

Re: Please help with First Deployement

Thank you for the answers.

When I first setup the DotNetNuke site I pointed the database connection string to the Database on the Production server and everything worked great. So I copied the files up to the server and tried to run the project again but for some reason it pointed to LocalHost. I have tried both HTTP and File System methods and for some reason I just cant get things to point in the right place. I have read the Documentation provided by DotNetNuke and DiscountASP.Net

This is really frustrating because I love the look and feel of the software...but I can only get it to work on my local machine.

Again I would like to thank you for the replies and when I do get this to work I will have to post instructions.

Thanks,
Will
