High level portal question

I apologize in advance for this newbie type post, but I am trying to get my arms around portals and would like some clarification and direction.

If I understand correctly, creating a portal under an install of DNN essentialy creates another separate DNN instance?  Therefore, I could have an example DNN site at the "top" level, so to speak, and then create other DNN sites "underneath" it that are separate but have the same DNN functionality?

If this is true, is there a way to install/configure the portal "underneath" the top level so that certain functionality already installed, e.g. the Repository Module or a Text/HTML module on the "home page"?

Lastly, where is a good place to start to get a handle on doing this?  All direction appreciated.

Thank you!

Re: High level portal question

creating an additional portal will not install an additional instance of DotNetNuke, both portals will use same code files, but data is kept completely separated, therefore they cannot share module contents, regardless of the domains they use, even if the one is a child in a subfolder of the other.

Re: High level portal question

Thanks for your response.  In the meantime I did find the Portal Template User Guide and am reviewing it.

Re: High level portal question

After you've read the guide and experimented with portal exporting and importing to ensure that it will work for you, go and look at this module http://www.freednnsite.com/ from Onyaktech.

Note that templates will let you have the modules ready to go on the page, but the modules generally still have to be configured for your users. Nothing will simply duplicate a portal with everything ready to go. Note also that configuring modules for use is pretty much guaranteed to be beyond the abilities of just about anyone who fits in an audience that such as system would be targeted at. Unless you want to leave your users in a mess then you will always have to do some work to make it work for them.
