All page and module settings causes an error

When I try to go to "Settings" for any page or any module I get the following error:

Error: Module is currently unavailable.
DotNetNuke.Services.Exceptions.ModuleLoadException: C:\Inetpub\wwwroot\DogHouse\Admin\Modules\modulesettings.ascx(112): error BC30560: 'controls_urlcontrol_ascx' is ambiguous in the namespace 'ASP'. ---> System.Web.HttpCompileException: C:\Inetpub\wwwroot\DogHouse\Admin\Modules\modulesettings.ascx(112): error BC30560: 'controls_urlcontrol_ascx' is ambiguous in the namespace 'ASP'. at System.Web.Compilation.BuildManager.CompileWebFile(VirtualPath virtualPath) at System.Web.Compilation.BuildManager.GetVPathBuildResultInternal(VirtualPath virtualPath, Boolean noBuild, Boolean allowCrossApp, Boolean allowBuildInPrecompile) at System.Web.Compilation.BuildManager.GetVPathBuildResultWithNoAssert(HttpContext context, VirtualPath virtualPath, Boolean noBuild, Boolean allowCrossApp, Boolean allowBuildInPrecompile) at System.Web.UI.TemplateControl.LoadControl(VirtualPath virtualPath) at System.Web.UI.TemplateControl.LoadControl(String virtualPath) at DotNetNuke.UI.Skins.Skin.InjectModule(Control objPane, ModuleInfo objModule, PortalSettings PortalSettings) --- End of inner exception stack trace ---

My Portal is running version 04.05.05

I haven't changed anything on this portal for months. I'm not sure when it started as I haven't needed to update any settings for a while.

I found a few other posts with this error but there didn't seem to be any concrete resolution.

Any help is very appreciated!

Mike Rogers

Re: All page and module settings causes an error

usually this is caused by adding a component (Module, provider), that does not follow the development rules, but it might also be caused by a caching issue, therefore I suggest to restart the IIS server and try again.

Re: All page and module settings causes an error

I did a reboot but that didn't help. I am starting to get more and more "...is ambiguous in the namespace 'ASP'" errors now too and across applications. Perhaps I should explain my full setup to see if what I have done is causing the issue.

I have 3 different instances of DNN running on my web server (each in its own AppPool). One of the instances has 120+ portals. I split some of those portals off into another AppPool to try and limit the memory usage of the original AppPool (I started to get OutofMemory exceptions).  I have since moved them all back to the original AppPool to see if that was causing the issue but they are still there.

These issues are starting to cripple the applications so any help is greatly appreciated!

Re: All page and module settings causes an error

I still am not sure what caused this problem but I found a solution that fixes it.

  • set to true the debug mode in web.config: <COMPILATION debug="true" strict="false">
  • restart the DNN application
  • re-set to false the debug mode in web.config: <COMPILATION debug="false" strict="false">

I am guessing that forces a recompile and releases what ever is causing the ambiguous error. I wish I knew why but for now I am happy to have found a way to get rid of the error.
