Is there a convenient file browser from the rich text editor 
I need something similar to the image browser. Basically, I want to upload a file and be able to link to it easily without having to worry about HTML. Is this possible? Am I missing something?

Then I suggest you use the Documents Module.

And I've seen a sneak preview of some updates happening - wow, they look cool.

So Yes use the documents module - it will allows you to browse to your local machine, upload an image, or, select from dropdown box.

There is an alternative free Rich Text Browser: FCK Editor. You can download it with feature rich DNN provider from Locopon's Site. It has a nice image and flash browser included.
