Child Portal/Menu Change
Modified By Abernus on 8/28/2008 2:44:14 AM)

Hi all,

I am not sure if this is the way to go or not so I thoght I would ask your advice. The site I run is for a game and in about a year there will be a sequal out. Now I want to host a site for this sequal but as the sequal will be a totaly stand a lone game I want to use a new portal for this.

My idea was to have my original site and login system, but have the portal hang off my original site. So when you log in to either the main site or the portal site you are logged in to both. Now bth protal will have independant info, skins, menus etc.

Can anyone advise?

Re: Child Portal

This is a common misconception ... DNN partent / child portals do NOT share the users table in the sense that a user registered in the "main" portal is automatially a registered user in a parent or child portal of that DNN instance.

Re: Child Portal

Ah, thanks for that, don't suppose anyone can suggest a solution for this?

Re: Child Portal

O.K so I have been giving this some thought last night and I have thought of a new solution. If I was to place 2 links on my site, 1 link for the original site and the 2nd link for the new site. Now depending on what link is selected would depend on what links are shown in the menu. All this would run form the original install of DNN. For example:

User clicks a link for GW1:
Menu reads: News, Resources, Information

User clicks a link for GW2:
Menu reads: Articles, Trade, Forum

This way if I keep it in 1 portal I only have to keep track of roles in 1 portal and not 2. So does anyone know if this is even possible?

Re: Child Portal

Well after some investigation I have found there are a few articles on snowcovered.com that will allow me to do what I need. The only drawback is they cost about $149.00!!! I think it would be a good idea if this feature was included in future releases of DNN. I have seen a lot of posts from people requesting the same thing and very little responce to any of them.

So for those who want the parent portals login details to be shared with all the child portals here is a link to the software I found on Snowcovered: DNNMasters Multi Portal User Sharing Xtreme (Standard Lic.)
