I compared the Install to Upgrade for 4.8 and the only differences were....

1. all the Modules were in Install
2. the Web.config was in Install
3. a database.mdb was in Install.

I used the install and it went great.

What did you use to compare the Install and Upgrade packages?

ok guys, here I am

  • I don't see a problem upgrading from 4.4.1 to 4.8.0 in a single step, there has been no consolidation of SQL scripts in between, i.e. all database modifications for all inteermediate versions will be subsequently applied.
  • you can use Upgrade package, if you don't want to upgrade modules as well, I prefer to use Install package, which contains all current module versions as well. Be aware, that database.mdf and web.config might get overwritten and you should backup them (you should do a complete backup as well, but might backup those files separately to be able to easily restore them).

I did the upgrade in one step (on my localhost devel environment and a hosted test environment), and have noticed a couple of things:

1. Despite Check for Upgrades being ticked on the Host Settings page (for both installations), the Module Definitions page does not show updates that I know are available on the localhost, but they do on the hosted one. Is there a new setting somewhere to switch this on?

2. I had previously installed FCK (ie. with or before 4.4.1 - can't recall) and carefully changed the web.config (well I think I did)  to the correct new settings for the upgrade (I used release.config as the base). However, it looks like both the sites are still using 3.3 of Text/HTML (the hosted site is showing that 4.5.0 is available). Should I find, download and install 4.5 of the Text/HTML module? Or perhaps it should be uninstalled? Although I just noticed that the curly blue brackets are displayed in the editors' toolbars (like above, i.e. on the DNN site), which suggests there has been an upgrade. Very confusing,

This may be simply about the Module Definitions page not being correctly updated for some reason. Any thoughts?

Thanks for your help. I'd like to get these things fixed before upgrading my production hosted installation.

I've done the upgrade from 4.4.1 to 4.8 in one step several times (testing locally, and on two shared hosts). The upgrade itself went OK, although I did hit a serious problem on the shared host at one point when I elected to upgrade several modules at once. I believe I exceeded the processing limit, and have done only one at a time since without difficulties. The upgrades themselves went fine, but I have hit two errors since that are noted in other threads. I have two more sites to do, but will likely wait until I get more information on the errors I'm seeing.
