URL Potential Disaster........ Really Need Assistance

Let me start at the beginning. I set up a shared hosting account at godaddy and was told I needed a dedicated ip address to develop my site before moving my domain name away from my existing provider. Was told that although it looks like everything thing is pointing to the ip address that once I flip the switch on the domain all URLs would say my domain name.

Well unfortunately that is not the way it turned out. ALL URLs show the ip address. Now after talking to them tonight they say DNN writes it into the code and the only thing I can do is uninstall it and reinstall and rebuild my site that took me three weeks to build. Grrrr.

After scouring the forum here the only solution I found for my shared hosting situation was to put the addresses in the portal alias. They have been that way for 4 days now and nothing has changed. Still the ip shows in the URL. The first address in the portal alias is the ip but there is no way to delete it and I'm afraid if I did that then maybe I couldn't get to my site at all. I really have to believe that I am not the only one this has ever happened to. Those that develop locally must have had some experience with this.

So this is my last ditch effort for help before spending not only another 3 weeks rebuilding but seeing as I "flipped the switch" on my domain I'll have no web site at all during the rebuild. So if anyone has a way to fix this I would be greatly humbled and honored to accept your help.

I'm all ears,

Mike

Re: URL Potential Disaster........ Really Need Assistance

Mike,

Disclaimer: I haven't used GoDaddy for hosting so I am not familiar with thier particular setup.

DNN doesn't hard code the site address, rather it takes it from the portal alias records in the database.  You might get some issues if when developing the site you hard coded some links in a module using the ip address.

When you access the site using your base url (e.g www.domain.com) can you access the site and if so what does the address in the browser address bar show once the page has loaded?

Re: URL Potential Disaster........ Really Need Assistance

Well with godaddy you have to install DNN in a sub directory so here is what happens:

type www.domainname.com and a HTML file redirects you to www.domainname.com/directory. All that looks fine.

Once it redirects and the site begins to load the URL changes to http://ipaddress/home. All pages navigated to after that say the ip address. I was prepared for maybe the links needing to be redone or at least them maybe saying the ip address but not every page off the menu including the home page.

I'm not sure if the ip address being the first in the list of portal aliases makes it default to that but as I said before there seems to be no way to delete it.

Thanks for your quick response,

Mike

Re: URL Potential Disaster........ Really Need Assistance

Are you sure the html file isn't redirecting to the "http://ipaddress/home" URL?  Also, do you have www.domainname.com/directory as a valid portal Alias for the site?

Re: URL Potential Disaster........ Really Need Assistance

Hey WEB,

The answer is yes, the redirect goes to the domain name but.............

We fixed the problem. Just as I thought the ip address being first in line made it the default. Although you could not delete it from the portal alias (which they really should allow as long as there are other aliases) we did it from the database. Then made the domain name first and holy cow it worked like a charm.

I've got to believe others have had this issue so I hope this will help them in the future.

Thanks WEB,

Mike
