I need advice on SQL database synch

Hi,

I have my DNN sites are running on development and production servers. All the files on development server and production server are pretty much the same. Now the development DNN site connect to a development SQL 2005 database server and production DNN site is connecting to a production SQL 2005 server.

I am trying to have my internal staff to make change on the development site first before put it to the live server. Does anybody know the best way to have the database on developent server will synch or update to the production sql database server if anytime we change from the development sql server?

Manually or automatically fine with me

Thanks

Re: I need advice on SQL database synch

You have to be very careful with this, as to actually implement it you must NEVER make changes on the other environment as your id's and other relational items can get out of sync with each other and cause total chaos.

You could most likely configure replication or another method if you truly want the dev database to be considered the actual data, but that would do it real time so most likely it will not meet your needs.

You might be able to use a DB compare tool to generate sync scripts when needed.

Re: I need advice on SQL database synch

After taking heed of Mitch's warnings have a look at the Red Gate SQL compare products (also the SQL comparison bundle).  When sync'ing the 2 databases you don't want to sync all the tables (e.g. the event and log tables). These products allow you to choose which tables and rows you want to sync. We have found them very useful.

Re: I need advice on SQL database synch

Thanks for your input

But I still do not understand what is the real purpose of setting the site on development server and production server if we can not synch database with each other?

Re: I need advice on SQL database synch

You can sort of sync them using tools - but as said above, you have to be careful!  There is not any inbuilt functionality in DNN to do this syncing for you, but you *could* use SQL server replication.
