Validation of v13wstat3 MAC failed 
A critical error has occurred.
Validation of v13wstat3 MAC failed. If this application is hosted by a Web Farm or cluster, ensure that <machineKey> configuration specifies the same validationKey and validation algorithm. AutoGenerate cannot be used in a cluster.

The sites are not in a clustered environment and have been stable for a long time... the guests have never received these errors before and are using a variety of operating systems and firefox and safari. To date, I've not heard of anyone using IE experiencing the problem.

I started seeing this when I moved to 4.8.x for no apparent reason.  However, it has a fairly easy fix -- create a static validationKey under the machineKey section in your web.config.  It is generally set to validationKey="AutoGenerate,IsolateApps" however for some reason that will fail from time to time.

I haven't done this for my own site yet, but I have done this for some client sites and it eliminated their issues.  As a note, I believe the AutoGenerate,IsolateApps was put in the default web.config because there is a known issue (see SecurityBulletin) in the v13wstat3 stuff and a known value.

BTW, I failed to mention... DO NOT CHANGE your decryptionkey now that you have data in your portal (ie., users, etc).  That will make it so any existing users, including host, cannot login anymore.  Only change your validationKey to be something static instead of AutoGenerate,IsolateApps.
