Questions/Answer Length

Alright, I have dug all over the place and I am not finding anything that looks like an answer.

I have a requirement to extend the Question and Answer fields so that they allow more characters.  As it stands it appears they only allow 25 characters, which in most languages doesn't even allow for a whole sentence.   I can't for the life of me find how to change this number.  I have been into the source and it looks like even the fields are set to a fixed width of 25 characters.   I don't want to modify the core if I can avoid it so I am hoping I am overlooking something.

Any insights would be appreciated.  Otherwise, it is to Gemini with a change request for some flexibility on this issue.  Even us full-time DNNers get stumped some times, glad that we have such a great community!

Re: Questions/Answer Length

Stuart,

Raul Rodila presented an interesting approach to modifying the DotNetNuke tables at OpenForce Connect in June.  I don't have his email address, but you can watch a video of his presentation at http://orlando.dotnetnukeug.net/About/PastEvents/OpenForceConnectOrlando/OpenForce08OrlandoSession3/tabid/120/Default.aspx.  Perhaps that will give you some ideas.

Re: Questions/Answer Length

Stuart,

Question/Answer are part of the Microsoft membership component, included by the dnn provider, please refer to MSDN documentation for details.

Re: Questions/Answer Length

Thanks Guys.

I am watching the video as I type.

I have the Q/A turned on through the provider in the web.config, requiresQuestionAndAnswer="True".

I am not seeing any additional property that allows me to specify the length of the question.

It appears to me that Dotnetnuke implementation for the question/answer creates a textbox that limits the input to 25 characters.  Is that accurate?

Re: Questions/Answer Length

Hi Stuart,

Where exactly are you seeing this 25-character limit on the question/answer pair?  I reviewed SendPassword.ascx and see no such limitation in 4.9.  Similarly, the business logic stores this value as a string and I do not see immediate evidence of further truncation.

If you are using the AspNetSqlMembershipProvider, the backing store allocates 256 characters for the question and 128 for the answer.  This seems sufficient for all business cases.  Naturally other providers may provide different maximums (Commerce Server 2007 by default allocates 255 characters for both).
