Pure CSS layout ?

Is it possible using DNN 4 to get a pure CSS layout ? I'm a css-fanatic, and the shear weight of tables in DNN is making me cry.

Do the structure of themes allow for a pure CSS layout, or does DNN itself insert tables for all its ouotput ?

Olly

Re: Pure CSS layout ?

You can do tabless skinning for nice simple sites... they still carry the table structure within module. However, I have been working with a couple of talented people who will be showing how to deploy dnn xhtml compliant skins.  I have seen them in action and we're now putting together articles on how it will be accomplished.

There is a nice  simple css skin, not really for commercial use but a great step forward you can work with at http://css.dnncreative.com - Lee has some tutorials you can pay for to learn more about it.  What I will be doing  is working with the more experienced css people and working on more cutting edge designs that push the envelope a bit further.  When I get back from my overseas trip we will finishing the articles.

But yes we're getting there and yes DNN does put the tables in at this stage.

Re: Pure CSS layout ?
Hi Olly,

Yes it is possible, you may want to check this post as there is a lot of info discussed here: http://forums.asp.net/1232758/ShowPost.aspx

I've created a free DotNetNuke css skin which you can download and learn from. There was also a request for a css site where we can all share info which I set up as a free resource: http://css.dnncreative.com

Going the CSS route brings a lot of benefits, but you do have to jump through a few hoops to get it to work correctly. - ie. changing the default.aspx file. - Changing the DOC Type, changing the Solpart menu to a CSS menu.

If you then want to go pure CSS, you may have to edit some of your modules to get rid of the tables.

You will find a lot of info in the forum post and if you have a look at the CSS skin I created, you can see most of the issues that you will come across as I've detailed the install procedure for changing the default.aspx file etc.

There has also recently being info released on getting DNN to completely validate which goes a long way for creating error free CSS skins, you can read further info in the forum post above.

Hope this gives you enough info to help you get started.

Cheers,

Re: Pure CSS layout ?

It is possible as Lee says. Here are a couple of sites I have made : http://www.obrienit.se and http://www.obrienit.se/cityost - they are both CSS and valid XHTML. I have had to tweak the core a little to get this to work.

Some of the DNN modules are coded with tables. DNN itself doesn't add any tables, only the modules do. It is fairly easy to change all of this - if you register on my site there is a tutorial explaining the steps. I will be adding a free version of the cheese shop skin later.
