Re: Skin off your back...

Maybe the Wordpress/Drupal developers are independently wealthy.  Or just a giving bunch.  Or stupid.  Or there's no market for the templates.  Whatever the reason, there don't seem to be any templates for sale.  But there are DNN skins for free too.  Some aren't too bad.  And there's room for plenty more.

On the other side, I've seen hundreds of non-compliant templates for all kinds of things that are basic crap.  And thousands more that are duplicates of that crap.  And that includes DNN.  One specific issue with Snowcovered is that it's hard to put a free or $10 skin on there while it's easy to put a $99 skin on there.  Mithc Sellers has a site at FreeDotNetNukeStuff.com where he'll let anyone post free skins, there just aren't any (many) takers.

Of course, anyone complaining about this can also work to solve the problem --  Create some skins and let them go free.

Jeff

Re: Skin off your back...

Maybe it's just me and the fact that my primary focus is skinning, but knocking out a custom skin is so easy with DNN I've never had to rely on the "free" alternatives. I can just as easily make up my own or just use one a client picks from TemplateMonster, BoxedArt, etc. and make it work with DNN.

Just my $0.02

Re: Skin off your back...

All points well taken, and we are capable of creating our own modules and we do make our own skins.

My point was the drupal/wordpress realm flourishes with free, well coded and designed plugins and themes.

And it's not entirely profitable / economical to always build your own modules, when they are already available on snowcovered. It would just be nice if those people who are making money from their apps would then invest the time to beef up their front-end coding ability and really clean it up.

Re: Skin off your back...

A factor, I believe, is the tools used to create much of DNN code.  VS is notoriously poor at creating compliant code.  Complaint code has a smaller learning curve for designers since it behaves as they are expecting.

Another factor is the JS library support.  Druple, Joolma and others use jQuery, prototype and other libraries with extend communities making all sorts of free plug ins.  Many, many books are available to help people use these.  The same can not be said of DNN libraries.  You really need to open VS to get anywhere and that is a HUGH barrier to entry to a designer.

I have faith however with VS 2008 much of this will change and creating free skins will become viable.

Re: Skin off your back...

You certainly don't need VS to create a high quality skin. Just a little knowledge and notepad will get you the same result. I've used many different editors to create skins (my favorite thus far is Microsoft Expressions). There are many free skins out there. There are some compliant skins out there too. You have to dig around for them, but they're out there. it would be nice to see a robust and free (as in beer) skin repository site. Sites are started every year, but always seem fail to gain traction in the community.
