How to preview skin in local host

I've created a new skin and I want to test it in my local host before I upload it to the real site. But, I can't remember the steps to log in to my local host and can't find instructions. Can anyone advise?

Thanks,
~Bee

Re: How to preview skin in local host

You do need to install SQL express or the real thing as well as IIS with .net2 on your local to be able to run DNN as you do on the liver server.

If that is a problem then you can create a child portal as test portal and do all your testings there without worrying about the live site

Re: How to preview skin in local host

Personally for this task I use Microsoft Visual Web Developer Express 2008 and the DotNetNuke Starter Kit: it's all free, and allows quick editing .css files, intellisense, debugging and much more. When you want to test, just click "View in Browser".

Hope it helps,

Dario Rossa.

Re: How to preview skin in local host

I finally remembered how to log in to my desktop local host and upload my test skin.

When I load the skin it says

skin.ascx Error: The server tag is not well formed.

This is my first attempt at making an ascx skin. My first skin I did in HTML and I didn't want to have to deal with the XML this time. Comparing it to other ascx skins I can't find anything I've done different. Any suggestions? Should I go back to doing it the other way? It seems like alot more of a a hassle but at least it worked.

Thanks,
Bee

Thank you that's probably the best advice I've had. I've spent hours uploading and previewing my skin in the local host and it's a pain in the neck. I'm such a novice but I've figured out how to make a skin and put content panes and skin objects into it correctly.

I tried downloading that Microsoft Visual Web Developer once but it was taking forever and I didn't know if it was worth it. I think I already have the DNN Starter Kit because I can use the local host to view my DNN. So if I just install the other software, will that work? It sounds way easier than what I've been trying to do.

Two things I also haven't been able to figure out and can't find any documentation. A link or some advice would be terrific!

1) How do I get a menu into my page and format it? I don't seem to see how it works by looking at skins that are already done.

2) How do I change the default formatting of the skin objects in my CSS? I don't seem to know how to write the classes for them.

Thanks again for the tip!

~Bee
