Which Menu System Is Preferred?

I have been designing my first DNN skin and have it working successfully. However, I wish to make sure I am using the proper/preferred Menu System.

From what I can find in the various sources of documentation, [MENU] is available for backward compatibility and should be replaced with [SOLPARTMENU], which is what I am currently using. Although [SOLPARTMENU] also supports vertical menus, [TREEVIEW] is available as an alternative. I also see references to [NAV] but, am unable to find much documentation for it.

I realize that there are probably many other third-part menu providers as well and that ultimately, the choice may simply be a matter of taste; however, I am seeking opinions from the DNN core team(s) and the many experienced "skinners" in this forum for advice on which system should be used and (if [NAV] for example) where I can find documentation on how to properly configure it. Thanks.

In Christ,

Chris

Re: Which Menu System Is Preferred?

Solpartmenu is the oldest and therefore it has a lot of bagage. It has served DNN well and indeed done a good job, but it is not XHTML and in first load it is rather large. new dnn menu or [NAV] is the light one that is mostly XHTML and will grow with future DNN stock.

There are some good third party menus available and some are gaining momentom. Telerik is probably the most professional in that market.

Re: Which Menu System Is Preferred?

The DNN Horizontal Menu skins use the NAV menu, the DNN Vertical Menu skins use the Treeview - you could look at the .ascx files for these skins to get you started.

Also, take a look at the DotNetNuke Navigation WebControls PDF in the DNN 4.4.1 Docs download.

Re: Which Menu System Is Preferred?

Thanks for the information. After reviewing Rhys' response as well, I notice that while DNN-Blue uses NAV in the skin, it is still using ACTIONS in the containers which supposedly is replaced by SOLPARTACTIONS. Is there a NAVACTIONS equivalent or is ACTIONS no longer deprecated and is now using NAV instead of SOLPART?

I hope that question made sense.

Re: Which Menu System Is Preferred?

Thanks. I had looked at the horizontal skins and coimpletely missed the NAV reference. I think I had looked a TOO MANY examples by that point - my head is still spinning. I also had looked at the Navigation controls PDF but apparently got side-tracked before reaching the end of the document.

Thanks for he information.
