List Navigation - Showing Parent & Children

Have a left hand nav which is based on an UL list.  I believe it's using the house of nuke menu.

The end result desired would be similar to

    * Menu item 1
          o Menu item A
          o Menu item B
          o Menu item C
          o Menu item D
    * Menu item 2
    * Menu item 3
    * Menu item 4
    * Menu item 5

I want to be able to drill down the navigation (which goes 3 levels deep) so that only the Parent/Children of the current page Menu items appear.

If anyone is familiar with the houseofnuke free menu module, this is it's configuration in my skin file.
<dnn:HOUSEMENU  runat="server" id="dnnHOUSEMENU" Scope="54" ShowParent="False" IsRecursive="True" ShowAdmin="True" CssElementId="houseMenuVstatic" Mode="S" />

If i set to IsRecursive to False, and Show Parent to True, Menu item 2, Menu item 3, Menu item 4, Menu item 5 will dissappear from the page and only show the immediate parent or children.

Is there a way to tweak this module so it shows all parents on the root at all times or is there simply just a better module to do what i want?
