Removing the register link in header without recompiling source.

Is there a way of removing the register link of the skin without recompiling the source.  I know that if I take the

 < dnn:USER id=dnnUSER runat="server" >

out of the skin this will take the register link out but at the same time it will take the user name out.  I was hoping to do this quick and dirty. I already have the portal inplay and I just want rid of the register link without losing the username.

Thanks

in Portal Settings sett membership to "private", so members can only be created by the admin.
