How to setup dev environment

I have a base install of DNN 3.3.7 running on my local IIS server and I need to modify the source of a module we just purchased(source was included and is a visual studio 2003 solution/project).  I used the DNN install zip as opposed to the source zip when I installed DNN and there is no Visual Studio solution or project file included with this zip.  This seems like a noob question but how would I setup a dev environment with this newly installed DNN instance on my local IIS server?  I have setup DNN 4.5.1 dev environments up in visual studio 2005 but I am unsure how to do this in visual studio 2003 with DNN 3.3.7

Is there a document or site out there that explains how to setup a dev environment with an already created DNN 3.x install?  Or do I HAVE to use the source?
