It is not a recommended thing to do. The main reason being, if the core modules get new updates you now have to worry about those updates being installed and over writing your changes when you upgrade a version of DNN

As Chris mentioned, it is not a good thing to do.  However, you can indeed fork the module as you are intending, but you would want to begin by creating a new instance of it as if you were creating your very own module.  Only in this case, you have the code already in place.  At that point, you would just continue as if you created your own module from scratch.  Be aware that you will no longer benefit from upgrades by the DNN folks.  Any future upgrades can only come from you.
