Customizing DotNetNuke

I'm trying to determine whether the DotNetNuke framework will fit the bill for my project. I've read up on it and played around with it but have not yet built a site with it. There are a few areas on the proposed site that should be database-oriented. For example, there is one page that is supposed to display state-specific information. Ideally, it should receive the state (e.g. NY, NJ, CT....) as a variable, retrieve information for that state from a data store, and display it. Basic, basic stuff in any web app development but I'm having trouble wrapping my brain around DotNetNuke. Is this complicated to achieve in DotNetNuke? Can anyone give me a brief overview of what steps I'd need to take?

Re: Customizing DotNetNuke

you can create your own custom module, e.g. with a dropdown filled from the state list and displaying the state info after the selection.

Re: Customizing DotNetNuke

Yes as mentioned this can be a very simple item to do with a module.

You might have a look at the module development guides that Michael Washington has created at http://dotnetnuke.adefwebserver.com

Re: Customizing DotNetNuke

In reality, just about every part of a DNN web site is driven by database content.

About the only area that is not directly part of a database is the core skin layout of your site.

As such, it is relatively easy to add any sort of functionality you want to a site by creating plugin modules that perform the required tasks for you.

Re: Customizing DotNetNuke

Thanks. I have the general picture and I'm working on my first module. Michael Washington's tutorial was definitely instructive. What I didn't like about it, though, was that there was little explanation or commenting of the code. It was mostly "replace all code in x file with the following". I'd like to see a tutorial that explains the basics of a DotNetNuke custom module. Can anyone recommend one?
