dotnetnuke 3.2.2 Error - DNS error or server not found

Hello, I'm a new member to DNN and this afternoon I downloaded/installed v3.2.2 successfully in a virtual directory on the Windows 2003 server using IIS6.0.  I'm able to run it from the Windows 2003 server by using "//localhost/dotnetnuke" but when I try to access the website from a Windows XP system, I keep getting the following error,  "We can't find http://ece/dotnetnuke  Error - DNS error or server not found", where ece is the Windows 2003 server name.  Could anyone please help me what I need to do to correct this?

Thanks much in advance.  Paul

Re: dotnetnuke 3.2.2 Error - DNS error or server not found
A few things things come to mind.

1) Make sure Default.aspx is listed in the list of Default documents.

2) Try pinging ece and using the IP address of your machine instead of the name in the address.

3) Make sure Anonymous access is enabled for the website. It usually is, but it's best to make sure.

One thing to test is to throw a simple 'Test.html' file in a root directory of IIS, and make sure that you can see it from your other computer when you go to http://ece/Test.html - that will help you divide DotNetNuke related problems from general IIS problems.

Re: dotnetnuke 3.2.2 Error - DNS error or server not found

Thank you very much for your information.  While I was going through different forums looking for answer(s), I found out that my problem was a configuration problem.  When I changed the HTTPAlias value (in the PortalAlias table) to "ece/dotnetnuke" from "localhost/dotnetnuke", I was able to access the website from a remote system.

Below is what I found from the "Configure It!" forum:

You missed the portalalias.  Go into SQL, find the portalalias table and change localhost/dotnetnuke to server/apps_dev and you should be good to go.

Cheers,

That is what I was about to tell you... the portal alias needs to be added. Didi you change that in the SQL database??? You can do that through the host section of the site once you are logged in. I have multiple portalaliases localhost, ipaddress, and domain name.

Hello chevoldavis,

Yes, I did change it in the SQL server database.  However, after reading your post, I was able to add another HTTP alias via the host section.  Thank you very much for your help.

Paul
