GetNull() function for empty strings in DAL

I noticed that GetNull() function returned a value of System.DBNull, when an empty String ("") was passed to it.

Isn't that abnormal behaviour. I mean there is a difference between an empty string and a Null (Nothing in VB) string.

An empty string should be allowed to be passed to the Database as it is, but a Null string should be converted to System.DBNull. Can anyone explain the logic behind choosing the Null values (e.g. 255 for bytes) in the Null class????
