People tend to disagree on the answer to that question. Based on everything I have seen, there is almost no difference and it is a matter of preference. I will add that you need to make your queries lean in either case. SQL Server works best when retrieving lots of records from 'skinny' tables vs tables with many columns that contain lots of nvarchar/char data types.
