OK, I'm still a bit lost on "mixed framework" dev - can I open the DNN4 solution in VS2005 and single step my way through both the core and through the modules?

Yes, but only for modules that are devloped for .Net 2.0.  At this point the core modules must be developed and debugged under VS.net 2003 and .Net 1.1.  If you are writing all your modules for private use (aka: not for resale) and you do not care if they only run under DNN 4.0, then using either VS.Net 2005 or one of the free dev tools for .Net  2.0 (Visual Web Dev, etc) is the best way to go.

P.S. The fact the you can develop for DNN using the free VS Express tools is one of the benefits over DNN 4 and DNN 3 .  In addition you can also open DNN as using the file system option instead of the web site option and DNN will use the built in web server.  This means you can develop DNN module using XP Home Edition and not have to have IIS installed on your local machine.  For some companies this is a big deal since having IIS on workstations is considered a secruty risk.
