Can I use DNN3 module source files with DNN4?
I'm a long time ASP developer relatively new to ASP.NET and DNN. My existing setup uses DNN 4.0.3 and VWD 2005 Express.

I would like to work with some of the non-core module source files. For example the new Events module. Obviously the Event Module source was built around DNN3.. no problem. Can I manually install the source files for use in DNN4 by moving the source files to the correct folders? For example moving the EventController.vb file the App_Code/Events folder. If so I am fairly clear on what goes under the "App_Code" and "DesktopModules" folder but I am unsure of where to put the custom Event.WebControls.

I also attempted to use Visual Studio convert the existing module project to the newer format but was unsuccessful. No errors occurred but the "coverted" project had no folders or files.

Any help would be appreciated.

No, you cannot have DNN3 module source files in a DNN4 install. There will be errors when the controls are accessed because the code will try to be compiled at run-time. I suggest you deploy install releases only and keep source separate.

Thank you for your reply.

Do you know of any way to use DNN3 source with VS2005 or is my best option to install VS2003 and use DNN3 for tweaking existing module source code?

I think I saw an article covering this, but I didn't read it, so I couldn't tell you. Here's a good starting point. Of note, there has been Microsoft guidance that suggests using MSBuild.
