Syntax error when installing module but SQL is fine

I am having a strange problem with one of my modules. When I install it I get a syntax error in one of the sql provider files. When I copy the complete content of this sql file and execute it from Host>SQL with "run as script" the SQL executes without any problem. This leads me to think that there is no actual syntax error in the script but rather that the sql is interpreted in two diferent ways.

I hope somebody can shed some light on this.

Thanks.

Re: Syntax error when installing module but SQL is fine

Make sure that you are saving your SqlProvider files with encoding UTF-8 not ANSI. Otherwise, some characters (most notibly the '+') will get stripped out when the script is run in the installer.

At a risk of sounding stupid but how can I check this? And how can I save it as UTF-8 from Visual studio?

Believe it or not, humble Notepad can do the job. Use File | Save As, then choose your Encoding from the dropdown at the bottom of the dialog.

If this doesn't do the trick can you post details of the error and the offending SQL?

Re: Syntax error when installing module but SQL is fine

Thanks a lot guys this was the problem. Is there a way to check the encoding used for textfiles so you can easily spot a file that has the wrong encoding?
