How to access the current user id from SkinObjectBase?

I am working on a skin object--and I am stumped trying to find a way to get at the current user id.  I would think this would be sort of important for a skin object, but I can't find a way to access it.  PortalModuleBase has the user id build into the class.  Is there a reason why the user id is not considered important to a skin object base?  How do I access the user id, if I have inherited from skinobjectbase?

Thanks a bunch in advance for any clarification...
