Microsoft.ApplicationBlocks.Data using .NET 1.1.4322 in DNN 4.8.x???

I've been developing modules for DNN for quite a while in Visual Studio 2005.  Today, while I was adding the normal references to DotNetNuke.dll and Microsoft.ApplicationBlocks.Data dlls, I noticed that in DNN version 4.8.0 the Microsoft.ApplicationBlocks.Data DLL reports that it was built using the .NET Runtime version 1.1.4322???

Is that correct?  Shouldn't ALL the dlls in the core DNN framework be using DLLs built with .NET Runtime version 2.0.50727??

Is anyone else seeing this?

Will:

If you are not using the full DAL and BLL (like I do), I would recommend you to completely forget about the MS App Blocks and even the DAL+ (sorry Michael) and instead start using the new Data Source Controls in ASP.Net 2.0 and VS 2005.  They provide a lot of the basic data access functionality with basically no code in a very elegant way, not like it was in ASP.Net 1.0 or 1.1.  When you need to do more complex stuff they still work and you can control every aspect programmatically.  You'd be surprised of how little code you need to do to exploit sophisticated features.  I do use stored procedures for all data access so this keeps the Data Source Controls very clean.

Read about them here: http://quickstarts.asp.net/QuickStartv20/aspnet/doc/data/default.aspx but be careful with the big case study/example in the ASP.Net site because it is also about the development of a big multi-tier framework that again, makes you do a lot of work for what is my opinion (and please guys don't start a philosophical flame war) marginal gains in productivity and maintainability.

There are many good examples of the new Data Source Controls all over, I just found this site where I learned a few tricks recently: http://www.webswapp.com/codesamples/aspnet20/dependentlists/default.aspx.

Re: Microsoft.ApplicationBlocks.Data using .NET 1.1.4322 in DNN 4.8.x???

Hi Carlos,

Actually, we are quite extensively using the BLL, so I'm not sure if the Data Source Controls would work well for us in our situation.  However, that was an interesting read.

Thanks for the information.
