PortalAliasID changing to the base PortalAliasID on postback

Anyone know why the PortalAliasID gets set to the original PortalAliasID on postback?

Example:  1 Portal, original portal alias: www.somesite.com

new portal alias www.somesite.com/newalias.

I go to www.somesite.com/newalias, all is fine in the world. and the PortalAliasID is correct.  Click on any menu item and the path in the address bar still has newalias in the path, but the PortalAliasID at PortalSettings.PortalAlias.PortalAliasID get set back to the id for the first portal alias.

Is this a bug or is it by design?  And if by design, why?

Thanks.
