I am trying to repurpose the security settings section of the file manager.  I would like to hide the "write to folder" column and the username control.  Suggestions on how this can be done without completely rebuilding the file folderpermissionsgrid.vb and the permissionsgrid.vb control/compiling the core?

I was given the hint: you need to create a custom permission entry for read and a derived version of the folderpermissiongrid.vb
I created a configurable version of the permissiongrid for DNN 5, but it will not be included in DNN 5.0.

Creating a custom permission entry for read and derived version of folderpermissiongrid.vb sounds like it would control visibility of the entire permissions grid.  I want to hide one column and the username entry field.  I could use a little more detail on how one would hide a column of the permissions grid via a custom permissions entry.  How will this hide a column?
