ProfileEditorControl - How to validate username 

I need to validate the USERNAME when adding / registering a new user and see that all the profile controls can have length and validation rules applied to then using the user interface in DNN.

How can i set a validation rule and length check for the USERNAME?

Any help or pointers would be really helpful even if I have to make changes to the core. At the moment I'm struggling to find where the ProfileEditorControl class source is.
