Social Networking & Registration Modules?

I am about to put together a new site where I need to do as little development as possible.  Normally, I build all of my own stuff, but this is a site I need to get put up quick.  I want the site to have a wizard-type registration experience.  In addition, I need to have modules in place to allow registered users to connect to each other in every way possible with the tools available for the module(s) that I purchase.

With that very general description, what modules can anyone suggest that you have used?  I would rather learn from those of you who have actually used the module(s) that you are suggesting (or not suggesting).  I do not want to waste any money where ever necessary.  I am looking for flexibility, reliability, and speed.

Re: Social Networking & Registration Modules?

Will,

I've been using these modules:

  • Dynamic Login
  • Dynamic Registration
  • Smart-Thinker UserProfile and UserGroups
  • Ventrian Private Messages
  • Active Forums
  • Engage Publish

This collection permits quite a bit of integration -- not quite what I would like, but moving in that direction.

With the recent purchase of DNNFusion's  MyProfile and the integration of that product with ActiveForums, those products my be closer together than what we are using.  Also, the next version of AF is due out in a couple of weeks.  It offers the possibility of more goodies as far as social networking goes, but it's still a promise.

Even with this, there are lots of holes in the full integration, and there's lots of room for more work.  Take a look at FreedomYears.com to see where we are ... and check back in a couple of weeks to see how much more progress we will have made by then ...

Re: Social Networking & Registration Modules?

Will,

I have also used DNNFusion's MyProfile (bought recently by the folks that make Active Forums).  It is a good first step toward a DNN Module for Social Networking but I wouldn't consider it a mature, flexible product.  I think it is a module that has promise.

I do like DataSprings Dynamic Registration module for better control of registrations and I also use Dynamic Login but just for more control of the login page.  Of interest they also make a User Directory module which I've looked at as well.

In a nutshell I think there are pieces of the puzzle here but nothing that hits a homerun by any means.  I think it all depends on the features you are looking for and what kind of investment you are looking to put into it.  MyProfile is the closest thing to a cohesive set of features for this purpose but for flexibility if I were to go about a full site today I would piece it together (potential with fancy use of XMod custom forms), go custom.

Re: Social Networking & Registration Modules?

Thanks for your replies.  I plan to have this site be able to allow users to connect to each other on many levels.  Now, it obviously will not be 100% on first launch, but I am already aware of the fact that I will need a collection of modules to go the direction I want.  I just wanted to get some feedback from the community about the modules that really work for this purpose, and the ones that don't.

Here are some of the modules I am looking at purchasing:

XMod
Active Forums
Active Profile
Active Message
MyDNNSpace

And there is another one, but I do not remember off of the top of my head what that one was.  I don't have the actual list with me right now.
