Issue: admin user unable to edit content (turned out to be a "design" mode issue)
Modified By lance on 10/1/2007 5:05:24 PM)

I upgraded to 4.5.5 and a client (with admin role) was unable to view the content of the modules once signed in.  He was able to log in, do various admin functions and see the settings of the modules but no combination of permissions would allow him to edit the content.  Not just the HTML module but all modules appeared empty: titles and a few action buttons but nothing in between.  When in "View" mode, he Is able to see the content again but "Edit" mode removes it. I guessed his old account got corrupted somehow and eventually created a new admin user. Things worked ok… for a while.

Now, after a month of using the new account, the client is once again unable to view or edit the content of the modules.  I have looked through the DB and user permissions and even reapplied the admin role.

Not sure if related but I also see that the permissions for the modules do not show "View Module" checked for admin when the module has inherited permissions. I see this behavior on different instance so it might just be a oversight.

Where do I look?

Re: Issue: admin user unable to edit content (not a mode issue)

It looks like the user by accident switched into design mode. Hitting the "Design" icon (last icon in left section of the control center) again should turn back to normal mode.

Re: Issue: admin user unable to edit content (not a mode issue)

Sebastian,

Afraid not. As I alluded to in the subject, this is not a mode issue. I have toggled the mode a few times to no avail.

Actually if it was a mode issue it would still be a bug. I can't see how it would ever be desirable to not see the content of a module.

(I tried to insert a image of what I see but the pop up shows a runtime error.)

lancelong, as you describe it I'd also say your user is in design mode. Design mode is toggled with the magnifying glass icon, not with the "Mode" radio buttons. If the magnifying glass icon has a "+", then you're in design mode. If it has a "-", and you still cannot see the content, then something is really wrong (no idea what).

But I'd really like to know what the design mode is good for anyway (except for irritating admin newbies). Haven't found any use for it yet...

That mode is perfect for creating the layout of modules on a page. If I am a page designer, I don't care about the content and only want to layout the modules on a page for another role to come along and create/edit the content.

As already mentioned, I'd also say your user is in design mode and is unaware of it. Have your user log in and click the design icon (NOT the mode option buttons) just to rule it out.

Also, be aware that you must be in "Edit Mode" to enable the "Design" page function as clickable.

If the icon is displayed with a "-" sign, your user is not in design mode, if it is displayed with a "+", then he/she is indeed in design mode.

But everything you describe about this behaviour is indeed pointing to that.
