What are the ScriptResource.axd and WebResource.axd files used for?

Hello,

Can anyone give me an idea of what the ScriptResource.axd and WebResource.axd files are and what they are used for?

I'm not a developer and I'm relatively new to DNN so I apologize if I'm asking a silly question. I'm trying to clarify what these .axd files are used for and why they're referenced in the default.aspx page of a DotNetNuke website. The reason I ask is that I'm being told that they are ActiveX controls, which may be blocked by my clients very picky firewall, despite the site's having worked fine for some time now.

Can anyone clarify?

Thanks in advance.

Re: What are the ScriptResource.axd and WebResource.axd files used for?

Those resource files are the files that serve the scripts etc that are needed for ASP.NET AJAX functionality.

If for one reason or another they are not accessible on the client side, AJAX will simply not work but all functionality should stay the same.

Re: What are the ScriptResource.axd and WebResource.axd files used for?

All I'm really using is the default install of dotnetnuke and the basic modules. Do any of these require AJAX?

I'm assuming that I'm not using the AJAX functionality as my functionality seems to be in working order, and that while I can see the link to those files in my default.aspx file, but I don't see them in my install anywhere.

Re: What are the ScriptResource.axd and WebResource.axd files used for?

The files themselves do not actually exist, they are httphandlers that dynamically create the file....

Yes out of the box parts of DNN use ajax, like the inline editor for titles and html content.  However as I mentioned if you can't download the files, it simply falls back to non AJAX mode.

Re: What are the ScriptResource.axd and WebResource.axd files used for?

If I needed to could I remove the references to those files (script src="/WebResource.axd and script src="/ScriptResource.axd) from the default.aspx file?

What would be the repercusions of doing this?
