Team portal development

We are moving to DNN from plain asp.net based sites for our clients. As much of the structure of DNN is in the database, I am wondering how best to set up a develop and deploy environment for our team. We are doing straightforward DNN portal configuration using mainly off the shelf skins containers and portals with the occassional css modification or module enhancement. We may also develop classes that interact with the core of of DNN without changing it. Oh, and we will also add content too:-)

Do other teams work on a live site or is their a method of working with a local implementation for each team member and synchronizing it easily (like a check-in out  system with VSS or Subversion) with a staging site for deployment? Or am I expecting something that DNN isn't meant to accommodate?
