How to block a bad bot?

My site has been hit heavily by

"Sogou web spider/4.0(+http://www.sogou.com/docs/help/webmasters.htm#07) 220.181.19.161 "

After some research I found that this is an

"Unknown UA from Chinanet (220.181.26.1xx) faking Sogou search robot  "

How can I block it?  Any help is greatly appreciated!

Re: How to block a bad bot?

Hi odove,

since it looks like a malicious bot, I assume that it will simply ignore your robots.txt file. Have you tryed banning its IP address with the .htaccess file? Here there's a tutorial showing how to do it:

http://blamcast.net/articles/block-bots-hotlinking-ban-ip-htaccess

I think it worths giving it a try.

Best regards,
Dario Rossa

Re: How to block a bad bot?

Block the IP range in your firewall.  Create a rule for it in your IDS.  Block the IP range in IIS. DNN is not appropriate for every task you have in your network.

Re: How to block a bad bot?

Hi Dario Rossa Thanks for the tip. But I tried that and it didn't work.

Jeff - Can you please be more specific about those steps? I don't understand some of the stuff you suggested here. I have full control over my server, I just don't know how to get this work. It would be great if you can offer some step by step instructions. Thanks in advance!

Re: How to block a bad bot?

Never mind. I've blocked the ip by adding a deny rule in IIS for the site. Now that crazy ip is not hitting the site any more.

Thanks for the help!
