Can a site run without DNN ?

Sorry folks - newbie question here :)

If i build  a website using DNN, is it then possible to transfer only the site application code and pages onto a different IIS server that does not have DNN installed ?

Many Thanks!

John

Re: Can a site run without DNN ?

in a word yes, dnn is at it's heart just an asp.net application so you can deploy it to any server that has asp.net 2.0 and IIS. Erik has a good blog post  @ http://www.dotnetnuke.com/Community/Blogs/tabid/825/EntryID/1293/Default.aspx that offers lots of help for this.

Re: Can a site run without DNN ?

Cathal, thanks for the link to Eriks information -  I think then the answer is No !

It seems that once i have built a site using DNN it is then forever dependent on the DotNetNuke framework for it to function and will require DNN code to be installed along with DNN specific database tables. To give one example - if it were a pure ASP.NET site it would not carry the overhead of the DNN event logging facility.

I was hoping that once the site was built it could be detached from all the DNN functions and overhead ?

Re: Can a site run without DNN ?

ah,sorry i didn't understand your questions. Yes, dotnetnuke is a web-application framework built on top of asp.net, and all the code and database schema are needed to render the data you enter, whilst lots of the services can be swapped out as we implement a provider model across much of the project, you can't remove core code as modules will leverage the services.

Re: Can a site run without DNN ?

Thanks Cathal that's really clear now.

I have a dedicated IIS 2003 server which runs some classic asp sites and also a .NET site.  Will it be straightforward to install DNN on that server and build and run a DNN based site without disturbing our existing sites ?
