Linking to a Word Doc from a Word doc

I am trying to link to a  Word document in the DNN folders from another Word Document opened using a link on a page in the same DNN site. The file is found and the dialog box asking if I want to "save or open" is diplayed but on selecting the "open" option I receive the following error "Site is either unavailable or cannot be found". The link works if I am linking to a pdf or image file but not word docs. If I change the extension to html it will open the document, so I am assuming some security setting somewhere is preventing me loading files of type .doc.

Any suggestions?
