Weird PAGE NOT FOUND error

Hi:

I am using the standard DNN HTML editor to create a link to a file.  I use the editor's dialog box to navigate to the file, choose it and thereby create the HTML link code.  However, when I click on the link I am getting a "PAGE NOT FOUND" error.  I have verified that the file exists on the file system, resynchonized the file system and everything.  But, I still keep getting that error.  I checked the permissions - they look fine I think.  Any ideas as to what I could be doing wrong will be appreciated.

Re: Weird PAGE NOT FOUND error

It probably isn't either suggestion, but the first three things I think of is:

  • Maybe the file you are trying to retrieve is going through the ASP.Net pipeline.  Did you change the file extension to be handled by the ASP.Net ISAPI?
  • Is the folder you are using a non-standard folder?  For example, a "Secure - Database", or "Secure - File System".
  • Does the visitor(s) have appropriate permissions to the directory (via DNN and the server)?

Re: Weird PAGE NOT FOUND error

Hi will:

Thanks very much for your reply.  I understand the last two suggestions you made - the answers are NO (i.e: using regular file system) and YES (permissions are ok).  I don't understand the ISAPI suggestion though.  Can you elaborate on that?  I did a google search on "ISAPI file extensions" and all it came back with were "add-on" modules for IIS or programming suggestions.  So, I think I'm missing something very simple.

Thanks for any additional help.

Re: Weird PAGE NOT FOUND error

In IIS, it is possible to configure it to send non-standard files to the ASPnet ISAPI.  For instance, JPG, CSS, JS, and so on.  Do you know if that has been done on your server?  If IIS has been set to use a "wildcard", that is the same thing.

Re: Weird PAGE NOT FOUND error

I guess I would like to know a few things.

1. what is the file type?

2. what does the link you are using to access the file that isn't working look like?
