I represent a small non-profit that conducts 3 small conferences/ year.   We need to add the ability to allow attendees to register for a conference and pay by credit card to our site.  Could anyone suggest an appropriate module for this if one exists?

Enterprise forms is the way to go as far as event registration forms are concerned, not just because of the workflow capabilities, the fact that you could perform cost calculations from user entered data via form field tokens is a definite plus.  With payment processing there is the support for PayPal integration using IPN.  I don't believe there is an option to process credit card directly.
