email functionality (own smtp or not)
I would like to have some advice about a decision I have to make concerning the email functionality.  I have my own dedicated server which host several dnn portals (only 1 DNN instance). For the email functionality I see 2 options : install a smtp server (exchange maybe) on my dedicated server and let DNN use this one or I can try to find a hosting email server which I can let my DNN talks to (off course I have to pay for the last option).  Which one will be the best (to avoid as much problems as possible) (I’m an experience .net developer and learn fast new technologies but I’ not a administrator and I’m also not planning to become one).  Another question is how DNN handles the different portals concerning the different emails. I understand how it handles the different URL’s so that the correct portal is chosen.  Will the email work the same way ? What I mean is that if a user get’s a email from portal 1 will then the email address of portal 1 be shown or for portal 2 off course portal 2’s email address ?
Thank for your time and hopefully for your answer
Benny

Re: email functionality (own smtp or not)

Well, I am a bit confused because this forum is for the FCKeditor provider. I will try to answer you if your promise me to chose a correct forum the next time. hehe

About the smpt server:

  1. You can use whatever smtp sever you want. Most providers gives their own users access to a master smtp server. Check with your IP about this option
  2. XP and W2K,W3K server include a smtp server, so there is no need of a bigger software (Depending of your needs off course)
  3. You can use whatever server you want as it meets the standards.

About the URLs in mails.

Dotnetnuke generates the email by using the original site name. If you register to site www.a.com, the the URL will be generated with www.a.com inside the email. Most modules work this way, but I cannot be sure about all modules

Note: You need FCKeditor to generate emails that include a FULL url. from the standard newsletter module. otherwise your DNN will include only relative paths. please note that there are more specific modules that also generate full paths.
